A Story Told From Shadows

As two people pass by with their heads down

Each not sparing the other a glance

The light suddenly changes

And then projected on the side of a building

I see them

Not in the worn bodies they wear now

But back when life was new and exciting

I see them when they were dancers

Her in a dazzling red dress

And hair done up like a royal lady

Him in a black suit with a shiny tie

And his top hat and a cane

I see them in the middle of a ballroom

 smiling

Looking the happiest they will ever been

Still young and naive to the ways of the world

Then, as quickly as they came

The two vanish

Both off on their separate ways

Perhaps never to see each other again

But their shadows stay

Asking for one more dance

To keep the story of what

Could have been alive.
